In vitro antioxidant activity of selected antiasthmatic herbal constituents.

Anc Sci Life.2009;28(4):3-6

Several natural products, especially the ones with antioxidant activity have gained much attention across the world as an alternative solution to health problems and stress. It has been well known that excess of oxidative stress can result in the oxidation of lipids and proteins which is associated with changes in their structure and functions.

Because of the damage caused to the cell membranes, including other internal structures leads to mutations. Furthermore, cell membrane damage make way to viruses and bacteria into the body, thus patients like asthamatics are vulnerable to oxidative stress. Hence, natural products like Curcumin, a known natural antioxidant, play a major role in protecting cells from oxidative stress and their survival.

To evaluate antioxidant activity of various plant extracts and phytonutrients alone and in combination with Curcuminoids.

Study Design:

Various in vitro assays, such as 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and hydrogen peroxide radicals scavenging method, nitric oxide inhibition activity, 2,2'-azinobis-(3- ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) scavenging method, lipid hydroperoxide (LPO) assay were carried out to evaluate the antioxidant and free radical scavenging activities.

A better antioxidant activity was exhibited by some selected phytonutrients, such as Forskolin (95%), Piperine (98%) and Vasicinone (75%) when combined with Curcumin C3 Complex® compared to each phytonutrient alone.

It was concluded that Curcumin can be combined with selected phytonutrients in alternate therapy in the treatment of bronchial asthma.
